Alternative Wedding Dress Ideas (and some non-dresses too!)

So we all know the myth of the Fairy tale Wedding. The one where every girl wants to get married in a big floooofy white princess gown and glass slippers, and be swept off our feet by Prince Charming. And that’s totally fine. But lets face it. It’s not 1953.

If we want to, we can make our own damn fairy tale, and if we want to wear a quirky alternative wedding dress and Doc Martens, we bloody well will. That goes for Prince or Princess Charming too.

So here’s my guide to alternative wedding dresses and outfits for the non-tradtional couple. I’ve listed my absolute fave wedding outfit suppliers- wonderous places where you can buy dresses, suits, veils and more, with sass and style that will help you rock your day, your way.

1) The Couture Company

My ultimate favourite for quirky embroidered gowns, The Couture Company ooze alternative cool. Their quirky designs are colourful and cute, and they even have matching accessories and the most incredible embroidered jackets. Everything is bespoke and made to order, and is just exquisitely beautiful.

Plus, Jo, the mastermind behind it all, is also one half of the Eclectic Wedding Extravaganza team- you can find me in their directory, the Eclectic Wedding Encyclopaedia here. Lorna looked incredible in a bespoke Couture Company dress, pictured here- Their Bennett’s Willow Barn wedding is coming to the blog soon! Another of my fab brides, Laura wore an epic Couture company gown too- you can see Laura & Mike’s amazing Mickleton Hills Farm wedding here.

2) Legend Bridal

These incredible ladies were my stand neighbours at the Eclectic Extravaganza, and I spent the whole time drooling over how gorgeous their gowns were. I just love the way they describe their awesome alternative wedding dresses- “For the dreamers of dreams and the starry eyed; for the wanderers and adventurous. For the beautiful, mysterious, the wild and free.
We love myth and folklore, and those ancient tales inspire our designs. Our gowns are named after goddesses and deities, celestial beings and immortals as our dream is helping you feel like a Goddess on your wedding day. We are ALL about celebrating who we are and allowing you to embrace your inner heroine – to be your own kind of Legend.

I especially love their dramatic gothic black gowns! Legend are based near Manchester and make all of their dresses bespoke to your exact specifications. Definitely worth a visit! Tinks’ stunning pink Legend Bridal dress here was an absolute triumph- like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I can’t wait to share Tinks & Keith’s fab Lake District wedding soon!

I absolutely adore Lucy Can’t Dance’s colourful, quirky gowns- they experiment with dip dying, lace and layering to create gorgeous effects. Their collection is boho, vintage and festival inspired, so perfect for boho brides with a bit more spunk. I love the ombre dresses- great if you want an alternative wedding dress with some bold colour! They’re perfect paired with a personalised denim or leather jacket too.

Two of my gorgeous brides Emily & Cate, pictured here,  wore stunning dip dyed dresses for their wedding at the Bluecoat in Liverpool- they looked absolutely incredible! Their amazing wedding will be on the blog soon!

4) Flamingo Boulevard, Liverpool

In their own brilliant words, Flamingo Boulevard is “an unconventional, little, pink, bridal paradise in North Liverpool; for the girls wanting less traditional and more ‘them’ for their big day”. Jazmin, who runs the boutique, is always a lovely breath of fresh air in my Instagram stories, and they have a gorgeous selection of quirky dresses and seperates.

They also custom make their own veils to your exact specification. Lydia, one of my lovely brides, had a beautiful tropical theme to her veil- the detail in it was STUNNING, and I just loved the pop of colour! You can see more of Lydia & Sam’s fab day at Scale, Liverpool here.

5) Rolling in Roses, York

A fab, modern bridal store in York, “founded with the aim of providing cool, comfortable wedding outfits alongside a chilled out but completely professional fitting service. We have created the most welcoming and friendly space we can with tranquil surroundings, a killer playlist and bridal stylists who will never go on the hard sell to make you buy a dress that isn’t right for you.”

They also have eco-friendliness, sustainability and inclusivity at the heart of what they do, and I absolute love their stance on body positivity. In fact they believe that a person getting married should be able to wear anything they want without judgement, which I just love- exactly as it should be!

6) Chotronette

Totally and terrifically incredible, I love the gorgeous tulle, layered, embroidered gowns from Chotronette. They have an ethereal, fairy like quality that I just adore. I love this from their website- “We’re obsessed with Frida Kahlo, retro punk music, Art Nouveau architecture, Wes Anderson’s movies and Victorian glasshouses. Our artistic goal is to make timeless dresses that would have looked great at Gatsby’s parties, but that would still look exquisite 50 years from now. We don’t believe in trends, but we do believe in style.”

15) Dig For Victory

Is vintage styling more your thing? If so Dig For Victory are PERFECT for you! Dig For Victory began in 2007 as the passion project of designer/maker Eleanor Callaghan, who taught herself to sew in the basement studio of the vintage shop she worked in. She was inspired by the original 1940s and 1950s dresses she sold in the shop, and loved the fabrics and sustainable ethos that she found there. However, she was interested to discover that the majority of the dresses from that era were handmade and would have been designed and fitted specially for one individual. It was this personal quality, as well as the glamour and romance of the style, that inspired Eleanor to start Dig For Victory. They do ranges in a range of vintage styles, colours and fabrics- I just loved Naomi’s stunning bottle green velvet dress, below- so beautiful and different! You can see more of Naomi & Jimmy’s gorgeous wedding here
