How To Plan a Colourful Wedding

8 Top Tips for planning a colourful wedding

I’m a bit of a colour-seeking missile. I seem to find rainbows wherever I go and I love nothing more than a beautiful, bright wedding- one that’s bursting with colour and JOY. A colourful theme is guaranteed to make you and your guests smile and it’s the perfect way to splash your happy personalities across your day. Take a look at my top tips for pulling off a crazy colourful theme…

1) Colouful Wedding Outfits

Gone are the days where you HAVE TO wear white to your wedding.

If you’re bold enough, the world of beautiful, bold gowns and suits is your oyster! If you’re not brave enough for a full colour dress, you could always add colourful details, like Emily & Cate’s gorgeous matching Lucy Can’t Dance gowns here.

A colourful veil, bright shoes, rainbow petticoat or bold necklace are great options too. Go bold, have fun, and inject some fun and colour into your dress.

Check out my blog post on Alternative Wedding Outfits here.

Don’t forget the suits too- there’s a whole range of colourful jackets, ties, pocket squares and suits available too. ASOS is a great starting point, or how about a custom piece to match your individual style, like Jen’s here from Kipper and Chalk?

2) Technicolour Wedding Crew Outfits

One easy way of injecting lots of colour into your day, is to paint your wedding crew with a rainbow! Popping them in mismatched dresses and suits in different colours or tones creates a real colourful impact, especially when paired with bright shoes and bouquets. It also means that each of them can wear a dress that suits their style and shape, and makes them feel super comfy.

3) Beautiful Blooms

Your wedding flowers are the easiest and probably the most gorgeous way of channelling your rainbow wedding theme dream. Opt for bold blooms in a variety of the brightest shades. Talk to your fabulous florist- they’ll be able to recommend the best seasonal flowers for the biggest impact. Of course, Summer will be the best time of year for colourful posies, but there are great options for any season. In Winter, you could even go for baked/ dried flowers like these from Happy Blossoms, or a bouquet alternative made of felt or paper- Etsy is a good bet for these!

4) Colourful Wedding Styling

The world is your oyster here… from colourful table linens, bright vases, favours and place cards, to jewel-coloured lanterns, ribbons and flags- the only rule here is, the more colour the better!! If you have lots of creative ideas, but lack the time, skill or know-how, don’t be afraid to hire a stylist to bring your rainbow ideas to life.

5) Bright and Beautiful Details

When you’re planning a colourful wedding, it’s all in the details! Painted signs, candles, colourful confetti, fun garden games and of course, oodles of bunting and streamers add lots of fun and colour without too much effort. Don’t be afraid to get flex your DIY skills either- whether its tying ribbon chair backs or expertly folding 1000 origami paper cranes, there are so many ways you craft stunning props and accessories to brighten up your wedding.

6) Bold Backdrops

Whether it’s an incredible ceremony backdrop (which can also double up to add colour behind your top table too, or as a photo backdrop later!), or fabulous colourful graffiti as a backdrop to your photos, bold backdrops are always a winner! You can bet your bottom dollar that if I’m shooting your day, I already know the spots that have the best bold backdrops for your couples portraits!

7) Colourful Wedding Cakes

Who says your wedding cake has to be traditional and boring?

It’s a fantastic way of making a fun and colourful statement- you could even ask your guests to make their favourite dessert and create a bright, bold ‘wedding bake-off style’ dessert table!

I just love this bold yellow cake creation from Chloe & Max’s wedding, by the amazing Five Cakes in Liverpool, and this Ard Bakery concoction is a gravity defying colourful wonder!

8) Add crazy colours with Smoke Bombs!

I bloody love a good, colourful smoke bomb photo. Whether you use them for cool bridal party photos, like Emma & Anton’s wedding crew here, or as a fun addition to your couple’s portraits, the colour they create is incredible, and they’re such good fun to use too!

I recommend Emola Gaye WP40 Smoke Bombs- they’re the best.

BONUS TIP! Hire a colourful wedding photographer!

Of course, the best way to capture all of the colour and joy you have planned for your wedding day is to hire a colourful wedding photographer! I absolutely adore colour and love to shoot colourful weddings.

My editing style showcases all those gorgeous shades and tones and helps tell the story of your day, full of fun, joy and allllll the colour.
